Documentation

Algeria's money supply and its components, 2010 to 2022. 143 observations, eleven items: money supply, money and its breakdown — currency in circulation outside banks, demand deposits, deposits with the Treasury, postal cheque deposits — quasi-money, prior import deposits, state lending funds, medium and long-term external commitments, other net items.

What you cannot do without this file. These aggregates are scattered across thirty-five Quarterly Statistical Bulletins of more than a hundred pages each, bilingual French-Arabic, where the table occupies one page between price indices and insurance statistics. Each bulletin publishes three to six years, and the bulletins overlap — you must reconcile them to obtain a series, and arbitrate where they disagree.

Two exact accounting identities, verified on every column. Money is the sum of currency in circulation, demand deposits, Treasury deposits and postal cheque deposits. Money supply is money plus quasi-money. Thirty-four tables out of thirty-five satisfy them.

But those identities are internal to the table — they would hold on an entirely wrong column. The decisive check lies elsewhere: the bulletins overlap, each year being published by three or four of them. 132 observations out of 143 are confirmed by at least two distinct publications, and the confirme_par_deux_bulletins column marks them. The ten values that differ between bulletins are revisions: the most recent figure prevails, the first publication is kept in montant_premiere_publication.

One detail that nearly reversed the whole series. The years in these tables are printed in descending order — 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 — because the document is bilingual and reads right to left. Taking them as a chronological progression would have flipped the entire series while perfectly satisfying both accounting identities, which are vertical and see nothing of column order.

Unit. Billions of current dinars, as published. No reprocessing.

What the series shows: money supply moves from 8,163 billion dinars at end-2010 to 22,965 at end-2022, close to a tripling. Currency in circulation outside banks takes a growing share — from 2,099 to 7,393 billion, more than tripled — a sign of persistent cash use that demand deposits, up from 2,804 to 6,274, did not absorb.

Our "Quarterly national accounts" and "Consumer Price Index" products cover the two other faces of Algerian economic conditions.
