Documentation

Car ownership rates for all 48 Algerian wilayas, obtained by dividing the 2010 vehicle fleet by resident population. 480 rows: 48 wilayas × 10 vehicle types, plus an all-types total.

This figure exists nowhere else. Algeria's statistics office publishes the vehicle fleet in one bulletin and the population in another yearbook, and never crosses them. The join is made here, with its validity conditions written out.

The two-year gap, quantified. The fleet is dated 2010; population comes from the 2008 general census, the only wilaya-level count published at this granularity. Algeria's population grew about 2.2 % per year over that period, so the rates here are overstated by roughly 4 % relative to a 2010-population calculation, and more in fast-growing wilayas. This shifts the level, barely the ranking — which spans 38.6 to 359.4 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, a ninefold spread.

The limitation that actually matters, and it is not the dates. A vehicle counts in its wilaya of registration, not where it is driven. Corporate and government fleets are registered at head office: Algiers, at 359 per 1,000 against a national 127, mechanically concentrates a share that circulates elsewhere. This dataset therefore measures administrative concentration of the fleet as much as household ownership, and must be read that way.

What was verified. For all 48 wilayas, the ten detailed vehicle types sum exactly to the published total — 48 checks out of 48. The recomputed national fleet, 4,314,607 vehicles for 34,080,030 inhabitants, gives 126.6 per 1,000. The population column itself rests on two independent checks: the 48 wilayas sum to the published 2008 census result, and the male and female columns sum to the total within one rounding unit.

Only the fleet is divided by population, never registrations: dividing a half-yearly flow by a population stock would produce a meaningless number. The source's percentage columns were dropped for the same reason.

A derived product is more fragile than its sources — an error in either series would propagate with no internal check able to catch it. Both source series are sold separately and allow the calculation to be redone.
