Documentation

Public-sector industrial production in Algeria, quarter by quarter, 2011 to 2022. 2,334 observations, 43 quarters, 84 products — from dry natural gas to goatskin leather, taking in cement, naphtha, bricks and alcoholic beverages, each with its unit of measure.

What you cannot do without this file. These series live in the Quarterly Statistical Bulletins, spread across several pages of a hundred-plus-page bilingual document. Each bulletin gives one quarter; rebuilding eleven years means gathering some forty of them, finding the right pages, and arbitrating the overlaps.

The strongest check in our catalogue. Each bulletin publishes, alongside the quarter, a year-to-date total. The four quarters of a year must therefore sum to that total — a number published separately, in a fifth bulletin, a year later. 339 product-years achieve it. No other dataset of ours links so many independent sources through a single equality.

Forty-five do not, and they are flagged row by row rather than dropped: their gaps run to a few percent, which points to revisions made when the office consolidates the year, not to misreadings. The quatre_trimestres_font_l_annee column lets you decide: filter on oui if your use requires reconciliation, keep everything if you want the full series.

A second check, by overlap. Each quarter is published twice — once as the current quarter, once the following year as a comparison column. 1,346 observations are confirmed by two distinct bulletins, and 169 keys where the two readings diverge are not published at all.

Three traps in the document, mentioned because they say what the file avoided.

The unit of measure reads as a number: "106 kwh", "103 Tonnes", "106 M3" are powers of ten whose exponent lost its formatting. Taking them for values shifted the whole row by one column, and no order of magnitude would have flagged it.

The bidirectional algorithm reverses years: in text mixing Arabic and digits, 2019 and 2018 come out as "0109" and "0108". We therefore read the quarter's ordinal from the page — spelled out, immune to reversal — and the year from the filename, the only source that never passed through a rendering engine.

The third column is not always the current year: at the fourth quarter it accumulates the closing year, at the first it gives the previous year in full. Confusing them would reconcile quarters against another year's total, the gap passing for imprecision.

What is not in the file. Each product's parent section — "Crude oil refining", "Salt extraction" — exists in the source, but the reconstructed labels contain "Tonne" on three hundred and fifty rows, a unit of measure taken for a heading. The products themselves stand alone: "Naphtha" or "Dry natural gas" name one thing and one only, and none appears twice in the same table.

Coverage. 43 quarters between 2011-Q3 and 2022-Q4. Not every product is present in every quarter: the bulletins' scope varies, and nothing is filled in by interpolation.
