Who spends what, in Algeria. 1,370 observations: 273 products, six spending categories, five living-standard quintiles. For each product: each quintile's spending in thousands of dinars, its share of the product's total, and the total.

This is the only public source crossing spending with income. Price benchmarks say what things cost. Wage surveys say what people earn. Neither says who buys what — yet that is the question facing any manufacturer choosing a segment, any retailer deciding a range, any analyst studying public policy.

The top quintile accounts for 38 to 47% of spending depending on the category, the bottom one for 5 to 9%. The gap runs eight-to-one on household equipment, five-to-one on health.

The survey behind these figures. The statistics office runs it every ten years, on a representative sample of ordinary households, with collection spread over a full year to absorb seasonality — nine hundred products tracked. It is published as separate booklets, one per spending category, and never brought together.

The check is exact, product by product: the five quintiles sum to the published total. On rent and charges, 65,418,705 + 95,488,166 + 137,248,143 + 182,258,809 + 284,355,787 = 764,769,610 against 764,769,609 printed — the one-unit gap is the source's rounding, not a misreading. Thirty-five tables out of thirty-five pass it.

One obstacle we had to work around. These tables run across several pages, and continuation pages carry no title: "Personal hygiene (continued)" opens the health booklet's, whose table was lost entirely. Detection therefore rests on the header — "Product label", "Quintile", 1 to 5, "Total" — which is repeated throughout. The harvest went from four tables to thirty-five.

Each quintile's share is computed here, it is not in the source. Five raw amounts require arithmetic; a share reads at a glance. The product total stays in a column so you can redo the operation.

Scope and limits. 2011 survey, the last published in this form. Six categories covered: housing and charges, health, education-culture-leisure, clothing and footwear, household equipment, transport and communications. Food, households' main budget item, is not among the available booklets. Twenty products are dropped for divergence between two site files carrying the same content.
